Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg released their debut album ‘The Big Black And The Blue’ in January of this year, and following a full UK tour over the last couple of weeks, they release the second single from the album this week entitled ‘I Met Up With The King’.

After last summer’s God Don’t Like It shows on The Tamesis Dock with acts like Alessi’s Ark, Thomas Truax, Jesca Hoop, Shoreline and tons more down to play, it’s definitely a great idea to come back when the weather gets warm for some more shows!

From April the 28th onwards every Wednesday till the end of the summer The Moonshine Jamboree will be taking over the Tamesis Dock with some of the best folk acts from around the country and from outside the country!

The Tamesis, formerly The English Maid, is a converted, loveable, 1933 Dutch barge, now used as a bar-restaurant.

Singer and songwriter Cosmo Jarvis, tonight accompanied by a full band, describes himself as both a poet and a storyteller. This evening it was the turn of a moderate audience at London’s Koko venue to sit back and hopefully enjoy this brand of comical indie folk.

After confidently swaggering onto stage and introducing himself, Cosmo begins his set with a swooning version of debut album track ‘Clean My Room’, but with technical difficulties to overcome this gig wasn’t off to the best of starts. However, after braving his way through these teething problems this London audience was then treated to an energetic performance of interestingly named ‘Crazy Screwed Up Lady’, a track which also featured on debut album ‘Hum As You Hitch, Son Of A Bitch’ and is due for release as his next single.

With limited stage time available Cosmo and his band hurry through a selection of tracks all displaying his signature style of folk music and storytelling, mixed together with some light hearted comedy lyrics. Some songs seem hit and miss with tonight’s spectators, but all demonstrate what is clearly a well-rehearsed and polished performance.

After making good use of his acoustic guitar and mandolin, Cosmo Jarvis stops briefly like any rising musician would to plug his album, before promptly continuing with vigorous performances of ‘She’s Got You’ and ‘Jesus’ both of which earn a pleasantly positive response from this Camden crowd.

To finish his set, Mr Jarvis and his fellow musicians choose to perform the intriguingly titled ‘Gay Pirates’, a track worthy of concluding any gig, as this soulful folk ditty see’s a noticeable rise in excitement with the crowd chanting along to Cosmo’s infectious lyrics.

And so it’s time for another one our SXSW 2010 picks.

Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger! take a lot their influences from 90s American indie rock bands who in turn took their influences from classic angular UK punk bands. The outcome for this Italian group is a unique interpretation of splintered punk and bitter, dissonant tracks that never last longer that 2 minutes. Be Yr Own S**t is their debut CD out on To Lose La Track Records, a long running Italian indie label. T!S!T!T! has played shows with the legendary band The Slits (Blueghost Publicity showcase @ CMJ 2008 – New York), Chris Leo (Van Pelt) and Late of the Pier. They played four shows at CMJ 2009 in New York too.

In January 2010 they donated “Crime Wave” to Never Enough Records’ SOUTHWEST OF NEVER//CHARITY COMPILATION inspired by SXSW 2010.

Their new CD/EP – cassette tape “Whispers” will be out in March 2010. In support of “Whispers”, this March Tiger! S**t! Tiger! Tiger! will perform three shows in Austin, TX during South by Southwest (SXSW) and three shows in New York City.

What are you hoping to gain from performing at SXSW?
Fun! Fun! Fun! For us and for people who will come to see us and, of course, a Sub Pop Records deal!

Is this your first time at SXSW?
Yes it is and we can’t wait to perform there! Come to see us playing at Soho Lounge 19th March!

What has been your craziest experience to date in the band?
We have a big choice about crazy experiences. The most recently was something about Diego and his guitar…and when a drunken guy threw us a big microwave!

What are your plans for 2010?
Play all the summer in our basement to make a lot of new songs, a new album and tour a lot.

Do you have any weird tattoos or piercings?
No, we’re still immaculate! For now we only have many scars.

What artists are you recommending at the moment?
Giovanna: Surfer Blood and Dummo.
Diego: a lot of bands playing SXSW like Male Bonding and Abe Vigoda.

Emily Long’s epic melodies and soaring rock vocals highlight epic debut ‘When I Was In Love’ (out Spring 2010)

Emily Long is a gut-belting rock songstress making her debut with ‘When I Was In Love With’ (out this Spring 2010). With an impressive voice—confessional and towering, Long carries her anthemic melodies over a thick, driving band.

Upon first listen it’s obvious that Emily is a child of the ‘80s who probably spent countless hours singing Pat Benatar, Blondie, The Runaways, Queen and maybe some Joy Divison into a hairbrush. (There’s even a fitting cover of The Concrete Blonde’s “Joey” on the album.) What’s also very evident is how fresh, and edgy ‘When I Was In Love’ feels.

Long, a Tucson Arizona native who now residing in Brooklyn, explains, ‘When I Was In Love With’ is a record about the nostalgia and emotional upheaval you feel not only when romantic love is lost, but when a particular chapter in your life is closed.”

Long however, is not another female singer/songwriter in a room of shoegazers in a Lower East Side club. Allowing her soaring voice to turn raw when the emotion calls for it, she thrashes her head of fiery red hair around and slams her hands on the keyboard in front of her. A CBGB type crowd is more suitable. On the album opener “Anyone Else”, she details, “I wanted the dynamics musically to follow the dynamics emotionally of falling in and out of love quickly.” While on the hard rocker “Blackout,” Long attempts to piece together the previous nights activities. Showcasing her dynamic talent, Long ends the album with a sparse, moving piano ballad called “Cry Some More.”

Long’s music has been featured on the WB’s TV shows “Sorority Forever” and “The Lake”, underground TV series “Prom Queen,” and on compilation album “Bad Girls Don’t Cry” alongside Amy Winehouse and Duffy with international distribution through Universal.

Long after the music has ended you may be left humming the melodies and singing the lyrics of Emily Long – maybe even to a hairbrush.

Who: We Swim You Jump

What: Band from Groningen Netherlands – guitars, bass, keys, drums and harmonies

Formed in 2008, after singer/guitarist Richard Oosterbaan and singer/keyboardist Niek Verwey’s songwriting partnership earned the duo invitations to play three dates in Germany and Holland – the duo pulled in three friends, assumed the name We Swim You Jump and so became five for both live shows and the recording of their self-titled debut ep. Later picked up by Dutch indie label Subroutine Records, the band have opened for the likes of Loney Dear, Cold War Kids and Broken Records. A debut album is planned for the imminent future.

The Bands

Julia Marcell uploaded her demos to SellABand. Three months later, she raised $50K to record her debut album, appropriately titled It Might Like You. One Little Indian will release It Might Like You in the U.S. in 2010. This girl opens heads. If Chopin ever played in the Sex Pistols he would be called Julia Marcell” (Kmag-Poland).

Named the #1 Act to Watch at SXSW 2010 (About.com). Ólöf’s Arnalds’ solo debut, Við og Við was recently named as one of the 100 Best Albums of the Decade by eMusic. Ólöf’s voice has been singled out for high praise as “otherworldly” by The New York Times, “stunning” by SPIN, “remarkable” by the NME, “ethereal” by Vanity Fair and “impossibly lovely” by Paste. Ólöf’s second record, Innudir skinni was produced by Sigur rós’ Kjartan Sveinsson and is set for release this Spring. Olaf made it onto Never Enough’s ‘Southwest of Never’ charity album last month.

Produced by Ryan Hadlock (Foo Fighters, The Gossip) in the world famous Bear Creek studio, “uncontrived, Kill It Kid are a brave, raw talent” (BBC). They are one of ten bands nominated for XFM’s New Music Award this year. ‘An outstanding British record – 9/10′ Clash. According to NME, Kill It Kid is “bucking the trend with glee, making music for the misfits and giving us delicious little murder ballads. 8/10”.

Surrounded will take their adventurous songwriting an extra step further this year, into the lush world of vintage technicolor and unpolished high-fidelity with the upcoming Oppenheimer and Woodstock. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian), Bill Racine (The Flaming Lips) and Paul Mahajan (TV on the Radio), the bands follow up to The Nautilus Years is filled with more breathtaking moments, combining dense instrumentation and surreal lyrics.

Orchid and Hound is keyboardist Lawrence Alarcon and vocalist John Constantine. They have been named “Top of the Crop” (angrysong.com) for this years SXSW Festival. The music of O&H has been described as a stripped-down Queen, “Ben Folds meets The Doves” (fuckyeahmistakes.com), and SF Weekly calls it “soaring vocals over bouncy piano pop.” They are “brilliant onstage” (SF GUARDIAN). Orchid and Hound will release their independent debut record this year.

This event is open to badge-holders, and wristbanders – and also the general public for a fee.
